Note 4 : Energy of the Eyes

One of the important aspects Meditator’s need to pay attention to is how to conserve meditative energy. Today let’s talk about the importance of managing eyes to preserve your energy.

Watch young kids closely if you have not observed them before. Whenever they want to look around they turn their whole head not just their eyes. But watch adults, they tend to keep head still and move eyeballs. Kids are born with awareness about their eyes but over some time, they lose it. They move their eyes so little that they remain a bundle of energy. Truth is, the more you attain awareness the less is your eye movement. The other is also true. If you can hold your eyes still for few minutes your thoughts will come down automatically.

If you are wondering how your eyes are draining your energy. Let me explain this to you. Whenever you look at anything, both visual and thought impressions are created. For example, if you look at a Dog; not only you will conclude that it is a Dog but there is a good chance that series of thoughts flood you. You might think of the dog you had, you might think of a friend you used to hang out with your dog, then your parents who scolded you for behaving like a dog, then the fights, then the anger and then the pain so on and on. Can you see how watching Dog generated a series of thoughts? But you watch millions of things every day and each one of them has the potential to create a series of thought chains. That’s why you are in a constant stream of thinking. Thinking generates a range of emotions. Emotions like anger, frustration, and love all can consume your energy. Eyes are the biggest source of thought generation and these thoughts can drain you throughout the day.

This is one of the reasons why all religions invited Idol worship and prayers. In worship and prayer, you close your eyes. All Idols in worship places hold your attention. This is the reason why religious and worship places immediately uplift you. There is a shift in your energy levels as your eyes are focused.

Whenever you are in choice-less awareness or present moment awareness there is an ocean of energy available to you. If you can learn to keep your eyes still whenever it is not needed then you will also see more colors, more beauty, and more love in this world. You will be surprised that the same trees and leaves which you have been used to look so different and beautiful.

What can you do?

First and foremost whenever possible still your eyes. If you can still your eyes even for 10 minutes you feel like you have gathered much energy. Whenever possible, For example, if you are waiting for the bus, if you are in a mall or public place then lower your eyes towards the floor. That way thoughts reduce. The more you look around the more thoughts arise. When alone like drinking tea or coffee, close your eyes. Give it a rest. Consciously avoid too much TV. Often spend time in nature.

Instructions:
The meditation lasts one hour and has four stages. The meditation is over when you hear three gong beats.

First Stage: 15 minutes
Sit with closed eyes. Inhale deeply through the nose, filling the lungs. Hold the breath for as long as possible, then exhale gently through the mouth and keep the lungs empty for as long as possible.
Continue this breathing cycle throughout the first stage.

Second Stage: 15 minutes
Return to normal breathing and with a gentle gaze look at a flashing blue light or a candle flame. Keep your body still.

Third Stage: 15 minutes
With closed eyes, stand up and let your body be loose and receptive.
The subtle energies will be felt to move the body outside your normal control. Allow this “Latihan” to happen. Don’t do the moving: let moving happen, gently and gracefully.

Fourth Stage: 15 minutes
Lie down with closed eyes, silent and still.

Note 1:
Those with a neurological disorder such as epilepsy should never use a strobe or flashing light for this meditation. Instead they can do the second stage with a blindfold.

Note 2:
The music in the second stage of this meditation has a rhythmic beat that is seven times the normal heartbeat. If possible, the flashing light should be a synchronized strobe, at a frequency of 490 per minute. If a strobe light is not possible, you can use a candle.

With this technique, you can slowly make your eyes as still as possible.
